If you’re looking around at Schertz homes, you might be wondering about what there is to do in the city. Actually, Schertz has lots to do, including great shopping and dining, golf, and several great parks. San Antonio is a short drive away, but there’s plenty to do close by for Schertz real estate owners. Crescent Bend Nature Park is one of the biggest and most interesting parks to visit. Nature lovers will find many species of wildlife and plants, ever-changing with the seasons and the years. Three distinct ecosystems exist within the park. In the woodlands, keep your eyes peeled for fox squirrels, cottontail rabbits, Texas spiny lizards, and field mice. Walk through the 30 species of trees, especially the native Texas pecans.

Head to Cibolo Creek and explore the riparian habitat. Look for herons, egrets, ducks, and other water birds. Raccoons, opossums, white-tailed deer, and rabbits are also to be seen. This is the spot for a picnic lunch. Five tables are located near the creek and provide a relaxing spot for a meal with friends and a great place to observe the seasonal birds, dragonflies, and butterflies. The savannah at the north end of the park is the place to see wildflowers. The flowers attract honeybees and butterflies. One way to see all the habitats is to take the mile-long walking trail around the park. There are also two bird blinds where dedicated birdwatchers can look out for the more than 200 species of birds that make the park their home throughout the course of the year.
Everyone from Schertz homes can get to know more about the natural history of the park at one of the events at Crescent Bend. Bird walks are held each month. The next is scheduled for Sunday, October 15th at 8 a.m. Bring snacks and water and binoculars if you have them.
Find a map and explanation of the plants, animals, birds, and insects to be found at the park. Learn about opportunities to volunteer at the park, as well as a calendar of upcoming events hosted by Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park.
